These founding principals of the
Clan Cameron Association, established during the late nineteenth century
in Scotland, are also the reasons behind the Clan Cameron Outreach
Program. With an eye toward future generations of Camerons, the Outreach
Program ensures that the traditions and meaning behind our proud heritage
will be kept alive for years to come.
In the early 1970s a wonderful book,
entitled "The Camerons - A History of Clan Cameron," was written by John
Stewart of Ardvorlich and as of August 2001 is in its fourth edition. A
condensed version of
this publication is available on Clan
Cameron Online and copies are available for purchase from the
Clan Cameron Museum
at Achnacarry. Above and beyond these sources, and the value of the
Internet for Camerons to learn more of their heritage, it has been
put forward that copies of Stewart's book should be readily available at "physical"
libraries, for the general public.
With this in mind, the Outreach Program
was established by the North American Branch of the Clan Cameron Association in
2002,
with the notable goal of placing copies of "The Camerons - A History of Clan
Cameron" into libraries across the United States and
Canada.
The goal, of placing these books,
without charging institutions for their copies, is a difficult
one to meet. In a first step toward raising funds for this challenge, auctions of Clan Cameron and Scottish items, many one of a kind,
were held
at the Clan Cameron Association's Northern U.S. Rallies - June 2002 in Oberlin,
Ohio and May 2005 in Frederick, Maryland.
Proceeds from this first phase of
the Outreach Program have been utilized to obtain copies of Stewart's work, for
donation to libraries across North America. Chapters and Branches of the
Clan Cameron Association, in addition to proud members of the Association, are
also encouraged to obtain copies and seed them at major libraries.

Just because the chapters and branches of the Clan
Cameron Association have selected major libraries and institutions for
Outreach Program donations, doesn't mean that Association members cannot
also become personally involved. When donating a copy of
"The Camerons - A History of Clan Cameron" to your local
library, favorite college or even the library in the town where you were born and
raised, you are personally doing your part to leave a legacy of Cameron
heritage.
Simply purchase
a copy of this wonderful book from the Clan Cameron Museum via mail
order. When it arrives, either hand deliver the book or mail it to
the library of your choice with a letter of explanation. Please
remember that these copies are to be gifted, free of charge, but that
you may inscribe your gift (with or without a bookplate) so that future
generations know who it came from.
Once the library of your choice has obtained their copy,
contact us to send along the
pertinent details (library name and street address, in addition to the call
number they assign). The details will be added above, to the
listing of institutions with a copy available. We would also
encourage members who make this effort on their own to contact their
local chapter or branch to share the information locally within their
newsletter.
With the efforts of clansfolk, along with the chapters
and branches of the Association, we may put forth a unified effort on
this project, one that will reside throughout North America for
generations to come. That is, in itself, a noble goal for us to
share. |
