Participant #28194

Paternal Line:

Alexander Wilnor Cameron (1927-2002)
b. Chicago, Illinois, USA
Spouse: Elizabeth Gorndt

Alexander Sebastian Cameron (1891-1978)
b. Livingstone, Gladstone, Manitoba, Canada
Spouse: Grace Ann Fawcett

David Allen Cameron (1848-1902)
b. Kirkhill Parish, Inverness-shire, Scotland
Spouse: Georgina Elizabeth Sebastian

John Cameron (1813-1880)
b. Kilmorack Parish, Inverness-shire, Scotland
Spouse: (1) Janet Campbell; (2) Isabella Dallas

This paternal line has been traced back to the Beauly, Inverness-shire area and the Black Isle.  It is thought that they are descended from a Donald Cameron,  valet to an early Lochiel from a notable Cameron family, though that may be mere legend.

John Cameron (1813-1880) may be the son of Kenneth Cameron and Margaret M(a)cLeod, both of Urquhart Parish, though that is not proven beyond a doubt.

No relationship to other Cameron project participants has been established.

Spouse: Nancy Fraser

Angus Mor Cameron (1786-? )
b. Ratullochmore, Kilmonivaig Parish, Inverness-shire, Scotland
Spouse: Katherine MacDiarmid

This paternal line is believed to have resided at Ratullochmore, in Kilmonivaig Parish, since the late 1600s.  They are also believed to have originally been MacMartins, possibly descended from Duncan MacMartin of Letterfinlay, Chieftain of the MacMartins and foster brother to Lochiel (he would have been Chieftain at the time of the Battle of Killicrankie).  The family was cleared from Ratullochmore around 1850.  Three brothers settled in Nova Scotia: William Angus (Big Angus) in Caledonia, Nova Scotia; Duncan in Lochaber, Nova Scotia and Angus (Little Angus) in Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia.

Paternal Line:

Charles Stewart "Jack" Cameron (1909-1953)
b. Sweetwater, Texas, USA
Spouse: Georgia Ophelia Skipper

Charles Elmer Cameron (1887-1948)
b. Cleburne, Texas, USA
Spouse: Lillian Irene Merrell

(Rev.) Charles Stewart Cameron (1858-1934)
b. Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA
Spouse: Mary Adelaide "Addie" Murray

Allan W. Cameron (1824-1889)
b. St. Raphaels, Ontario, Canada
Spouses: 1) Virginia Davis - 2) Martha Boyett

Dougald Cameron (circa 1797-?)
Spouse: Catherine Laroque

Allan Cameron was a Civil War veteran.  His wife, Virginia Davis, died prior to 1860 when he entered the war.  Records in Baton Rouge , LA indicated that Allan had another son besides Charles, William, born about 1854 or 1855, of whom we know nothing.  Charles Stewart Cameron became a Methodist minister (by conversion, presumably from Catholicism) in the late 1800s and moved his family from Mississippi (Hancock Co.) to Texas.  There is a possibility that Alexander F. Cameron, b. Bay St. Louis, Ontario, Canada, was Allan's brother.  Alexander was married twice; had 2 daughters by his first wife; and, after the Civil War, became a prominent lumberman in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, before his death in a drowning accident.  No other information is known on the origins of this family other than they were Scottish.

James Cameron (1736-1839) emigrated from Scotland around 1770 and settled along the Hudson River on part of Thurmon's patent.  His gravesite is marked on the road near his farm in Thurman Township, Warren County, NY, 3 miles north of the Stony Creek station on the D&H RR.  The cast iron plaque states, "James Cameron, Pioneer Woodsman, Farmer, Justice of the Peace, Settled in ;this valley in 1773. Buried 100 feet west of this marker"

James J. Cameron (1794-1858) served in the War of 1812 and was a member of the New York State Legislature.

All family information from George Robert to present is verified by official records.  However, we are trying to verify a link on a chart that is on the web at: www.islandregister.com/cameron1.html entitled "The Descendants of Archibald Cameron, Sr. and Sarah McDonald".  The compiler, Mr. George Thomarat, feels confident of the connection and has listed George Robert Cameron as number 84 on the chart.  Paternal line connections follow Donald (#25), Peter (#6), Archibald (#3), Ranald (#2), and finally to Archibald Sr, (#1).   Records in Canada before and during George Robert Camerons' period are hard to find, so we hope that the DNA project will provide a solid link back from George Robert Cameron, and perhaps even beyond Archibald Cameron, Sr.

No relationship to other Cameron project participants has been established.

Stewart Lloyd Cameron (1898-1958)

John Cameron (c. 1828-1886?)
b. Inverness-shire
Spouse: Jessie McBean Stewart

John appears to have arrived in Australia in about 1852, went into business as a merchant and shipping agent in Sydney. He married in 1859, had five children, then separated from his wife and family in about 1873, and was not spoken of again. He died alone in hospital, and nothing is on his death certificate - we are not absolutely certain that this is our man, but he was 60, in the colony for 34 years, born in Scotland, and a broker.

The only family history that has been handed down to us is a pencil note on an envelope containing a photo of an unidentified elderly woman, taken at Greenock. The photo dates technically to no earlier than 1857, and probably 1865, though the dress is of the 1840s. We guess her to be John's mother. The note was apparently written by John's son Stewart Buyers Cameron, and reads:

"Charles Cameron - Grandfather was first cousin of the then Lochiel.  He died at Oban aged 102.   Two grandfathers at Battle of Waterloo.  General Sir Duncan Cameron was father's cousin.
Lochiel raised and equipped a battalion of Cameron's at his own expense."

For John's date of birth we have taken extrapolations from his stated age on his children's birth certificates.  None of the other information has given us a lead into either the Lochiel family or Sir Duncan's origins in the Cuilchenna branch of the Callart line. Sir Duncan was Commander of Forces in the Australian Colonies and New Zealand in the 1860s, when Stewart Buyers Cameron was a boy. Maternal connections have been unavailable for search until we find some names to work with.

Alexander said his father was "John Cameron." We have not found any details in the kirk session records, however. And we know nothing further of this John Cameron. Presumably he would have been born before about 1835.   At various times, Alexander, a saddler,  gave his birthplace as Lochaber, Ft. William, Spean Bridge, and, on his earliest verified census report, Stronaba.  On the 1861 and 1871 census reports, we feel we have found the boy Alexander living at the Farms of Achnacarry and at Stronaba. All the details seem to match.  Alexander's life is well documented after 1881, but we'd certainly like to find out more about his early life and ancestors. Perhaps someone out there matches up with us!  For what it's worth, Alexander was a dancer and favored the Erracht Cameron tartan. We wonder if there's a clue there or if he just happened to like the tartan!

My goal is to find the names of Duncan's parents and trace him back to Scotland. Using the old method of naming their children, Duncan's fathers name should be Donald. I have Duncan and Catherine's marriage record from St. Columba Presbyterian Church in Lochiel Township, Glengarry County, Ontario; however, it does not list either of their parents names. I also know that they lived in Kenyon Township, on property owned by an Angus Cameron, whom we believe to be a brother of Duncans.

I have traced the ancestors of Sarah Cameron, my great grandmother back to Scotland. Her parents names are John Cameron (1817-1892) and Hectorina McLeod (1823-1878), John was born on the Island of Iona and Hectorina was from Sutherland. The next generation back is Angus Cameron (c1785-1840's) and Marrion McGilvray (c1788-1860's), both from the Island of Iona. This family came to Quebec, Canada about 1820. Records show that the first four children were born in Scotland and the last four were born in Grenville Township, Quebec; however we can not find the name of the ship they left Scotland on. Next is Neil Cameron (c1744-?) Island of Iona and Marion Livingstone, Morvern, Scotland. And finally Angus Cameron (c1705-?).

John Baptist and several of his sons severed in the Maryland Militia during the Revolution.  There the family tree gets foggy, some people claim there is a John Baptist Cambron Sr. but I can't find any records.  My theory is that John Baptist is the son of John Andrew Cameron who was transported to Charles Co. MD in 1716 after the battle of Preston in 1715. They both lived in the same township of Charles Co. at the right time to be father and son.  There is a very romantic tale of seven Protestant Cameron brothers coming from Scotland.  One married a Roman Catholic woman so the 6 brothers forced him to change his name to Cambron.  I have also heard the tale told as seven Roman Catholic Cambron brothers with one marrying a Protestant woman.  I don't put much faith in this story. The name is spelled many ways in 18th century Maryland records, I think it is just a matter of the un-standardized spelling of the time.

Angus Cameron and family emigrated from Scotland to New York state c. 1775, possibly to Tyron Co., New York.  According to family Bible he was a Captain.  His son Lt. John Cameron joined the King's Orange Rangers of New York state during the Revolutionary  War.  John may have been an Ensign first before becoming a Lt.  The KOR was transferred to Halifax, NS and a detachment was sent on to Liverpool, NS including John Cameron.  John married Lucy Godfrey in Liverpool .

After the war, John and Lucy moved to Sydney, NS.  They had a large family.  One of his sons, Charles, moved to Amhearst, NS ca 1813 and marries Hannah Freeman.  They and their family moved to the Burlington, Ontario area in 1818.  Charles' trail ends in Ontario but three of his sons moved to the USA and probably ended up in St. Louis, Missouri.  Two brothers, William and John, went to Texas. The third brother, Joshua, stayed and farmed in Missouri.

The Camerons were a noted family in Telfair county, GA.  We have traced our ancestry back to Duncan Cameron who was born in Scotland in the mid 1700s (several sons were born in Greenock, Scotland around 1770).   Alan and two other Camerons reportedly emigrated to Cape Fear and then Robeson County, NC about 1790.

I would like to connect with anyone who can help determine the area of Scotland that the first Duncan Cameron above came from.  I am also interested in connecting with descendents of the brothers of Alan Cameron:  Alexander Cameron (b. 1772 in Greenock, Scotland), and Duncan Cameron (b. 1779 in Greenock, Scotland).

Alexander Cameron (ca. 1807-1850)

Alexander Cameron married assisted-migrant Eliza Marks at the convict settlement of Port Macquarie on 4 July 1836: he said he was 29 and "free" (not a convict), suggesting he was born around 1807; unlike Eliza, he could sign his name.
When he died "intestate" in 1850, his widow got into trouble because she either didn't officially register his death or failed to pay Death Duties (estate taxes). In 1856, she was dragged through the courts ("Mr Baker v. Cameron") and fined for that misdeed. But in 1871 her oldest son launched a "Probate" in the NSW Supreme Court and successfully petitioned for the return of the money confiscated by the Coroner in 1850, a princely sum of 168 pounds, 11 shillings and threepence.
